Carrickmacross lace dates back to the 1820’s, from its journey beginning in Italy to the famine stricken homes of Ireland. A rich tale stretching from the Famine in Ireland, to the Palaces of Europe’s Royal elites, to modern day International Designers.
This tradition has been fostered and kept alive by generations of women, from the necessity of poor rural families, to the Sisters of St. Louis Convent who continued to teach this craft to the next Generation to preserve it, and encouraging the introduction of new designs which gave the craft a fresh impetus.
Carrickmacross Lace Gallery is located in the heart of the picturesque Monaghan town of Carrickmacross, from which this exquisite lace gets its name. The lace gallery is located in the town’s historic market square.
The gallery is where the Carrickmacross Lace Co-Operative display and sell their intricate, hand crafted Irish lace. On display are contemporary designs alongside more traditional Irish pieces, from small souvenir gifts to large commissioned pieces. They also make bespoke communion and wedding veils along with a stunning range of intricate christening gowns.
Carrickmacross Lace regularly arranges workshops and demonstrations for KnittingTours.com’s tour groups showcasing the traditional secrets of this uniquely Irish handcraft.
