For almost 300 years Kerry Woollen Mills, situated on the beautiful ring of Kerry on Irelands’ wild Atlantic coast has been creating fabrics and yarns from natural fibres. Remaining faithful to the traditions of its founders, todays mill takes advantage of up-to-date weaving technology, marrying tradition with contemporary styling for today’s discerning customers in Ireland and overseas.
Kerry Woollen Mills is one of the last surviving traditional woollen mills still manufacturing all processes from the raw wool through to finished fabrics. Established 300 years ago to alleviate local poverty, the mill drew on the adjacent River Gweestin for the power to drive its machinery and the water to wash and dye the wool. The mill was bought by the Eadie family in 1904. They had previously been woollen manufacturers for many years in Fermanagh and Scotland. Kerry woollen mills is managed by the fourth generation of the Eadie family today.
Arriving at Kerry Woollen Mills the visitor steps into a peaceful rural setting beside the river Gweestin surrounded by mature trees and mill buildings old and new. For several centuries wool fleeces have been worked on to transform the sheeps fleece into finished yarns and fabrics, blankets and throws, sweaters and jackets.
A tour of the mill is visual, educational and fun. It follows the path from opening of the wool fleece, teasing, dyeing, carding, spinning, weaving and finishing. Walking through the mill you are surrounded by colourful wool, yarn and fabrics.
