Meet Tomomi McElwee, the quilting expert behind Slaney Quilting Studio in Carlow, Ireland!
Tomomi has been passionate about needlework all her life. She is originally from Japan but moved to Ireland in 1998, where she began her patchwork journey. She taught herself at first, then joined the Irish Patchwork Society and took part in international workshops to learn more.
Tomomi is known for her ability to tell a story through her craft which allows her to truly inspire her audience. She recently showcased a stunning collection of her quilts at The Irish Patchwork Society and gave a fascinating presentation. The diverse range of her fabrics proved a huge hit, providing inspiration and materials for quilters of all skill levels.
With over 20 years of experience, Tomomi creates quilts that are both beautiful and functional. Her work combines the fine craftsmanship of Japan with a traditional Irish touch. She loves choosing fabrics and adding texture, and she still finds joy in the process after all these years.
Tomomi’s quilts have won local competitions and have been featured in exhibits across Ireland and beyond. For the last 10 years, she has shared her passion for quilting by teaching students. Her cosy Carlow studio is filled with everything you need to create your own quilt.
It all starts with simple fabric and thread, but there is so much more to explore. I love travelling around the country teaching other quilters new techniques and helping them expand their abilities.
