Discovering the Art of Aran Knitting A Message From Your Knitting Host, Edel MacBride

I can't wait to meet you in this stunning part of the world! Nestled in what’s fondly known as the ‘Lake District of Ireland,’ it’s a little further south from where I call home—perfect for a creative escape. We’ll be working with my exclusive Sliabh Liag yarn, spun with care at Donegal Yarns, to bring some truly special designs to life. The ‘Four Letters’ beret can be knit on straight or circular needles, and to match, I’ve created a brand-new cowl design called ‘Up The Walls’—though I promise, it won’t send you up the walls! Local knitters adored it during Irish Design Week, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

There are no cables in the cowl, but it pairs beautifully with a tunic sweater pattern that does—another treat for you! We’ll be working with gorgeous Aran-weight yarns, but if you fancy something finer, I’ll have some two-ply Irish wool and merino tweed on hand. One thing’s for sure—there’ll be no shortage of wool! Just bring your favourite notions, stitch markers, and general bits n’ bobs, and we’ll have a fantastic time knitting together!

Spin, Stitch & Step Back in Time: A Woolly Adventure in County Cavan!

Step into the heart of the County Cavan countryside and discover Crafts of Ireland, where Sandra Cootes keeps Ireland’s rich craft traditions alive with passion and skill. Your day begins with a warm welcome and a delicious country lunch, complete with homemade treats, before diving into the magic of wool! You’ll learn how to prepare a fleece, card wool, and spin your own yarn on a traditional spinning wheel.

Then, watch in awe as Sandra works her magic on an antique sock machine, showing you how socks were once made with incredible precision. From crafting a soft top with a hung hem to turning a heel and mastering the famous Kitchener Stitch for a seamless toe, you'll gain hands-on experience every step of the way. Plus, you'll uncover the fascinating origins of the Kitchener Stitch and its unexpected Irish connections. It’s a day of heritage, hands-on learning, and plenty of fun—perfect for any craft enthusiast!

Sheep, Spinning & Scones: A Woolly Day in the Maghera Countryside!

Join Jamese McCloy, a 4th-generation gentleman shepherd, for a fun-filled day on the farm! Set against the stunning backdrop of County Derry’s Maghera countryside, you’ll be in awe of the incredible bond between skilled working dogs and their sheep as you try your hand at a few shepherding tricks yourself. Afterward, settle in with a warm cup of tea and homemade scones as Jamese shares heart-warming tales of his farming heritage. Then, watch in fascination as he expertly shears a sheep the traditional way—if you're lucky, you might even get to snuggle a baby lamb!

The adventure continues with Fleece to Fashion inside a breathtaking country barn, where massive floor-to-ceiling windows frame the sweeping landscape. The warmth of a turf fire fills the air as you follow the journey of a fleece—washing, dyeing with natural colours, and spinning it into yarn. Channel the Giant Spirit of Northern Ireland with some teamwork in hand spinning, all while discovering the incredible properties of wool and its role in a sustainable future.

Then, it’s time to relax and refuel with a hearty farmhouse lunch featuring homemade bread made from treasured family recipes. To round off the day, settle in for a peaceful knit-a-long with Edel, taking in the spectacular views as you stitch and chat. It’s a day full of heritage, hands-on fun, and cosy country charm—one you won’t forget!
