The Sharry Cable
Mairead Sharry is an expert knitter, spinner and weaver living and working on Inisheer on the Aran Islands. Here she tells us about the Sharry Cable, a knitting technique unique to her family.

On Inisheer we always cross our cables on either side of the main panel in opposite directions. This distinguishes hand knitted sweaters from the commercial Aran sweaters sold in shops.
The photo below shows the reverse of an elaborate shrug, designed and hand knitted by Mairéad Sharry, one can see this feature of the cables reversed. The photo also shows the Sharry cable, which is unique to the Sharry family, and it not used by other island families. This cable requires the use of 2 cable needles at the same time and creates a unique 3D effect.
This technique is taught by Una McDonagh as part of the knitting tours ran by KnittingTours.com
